I had 2.59's in my 88 before I did all my mods. I now have the 3.54 and a 2800 stall. It's an amazing difference from the stock. My advice to you is do the rear gear first, and then if that doesn't satisfy you, go ahead and do a converter also. My guess is you'll be happy with just the gear change.
