Prince has bladder stones
 

We have 2 male doberman brothers, litter mates actually. Last summer Sam had to have surgery for bladder stones and this year Prince is scheduled for this Wednesday. Makes you wonder about pet insurance...:shrug01:

Ouch! I had kidney stones about 10 years ago and they are NO fun at all. There is a difference when the stones back up in the kidneys and then progress to backing up in the bladder. Neither one is pleasant at all.

Normally it is dehydration as the culprit so give your dogs plenty to drink.

Hope they pull through it all OK.

Yea, at least these stones are in the bladder and don't have to pass through the ureters like kidney stones. :ack2: I just hate to see the boys not feeling well. Prince has some kidney disease also so we've got them both on the Science KD diet and he's on some pills, too. We've had 3 other dobies and never had these problems. Wonder if it's hereditary in these guys :shrug01:

You need to find out what the stones are made of. That will likely tell you what is producing them and what you need to do to fix it. Some are based on calcium, and others on urea. I would think your vet could give you more details. They should be preventable.

They'll see what the stones are made up of once they get them out and send them to the lab. You're right, some can be prevented by diet.

Good luck. Dogs are definite family members. It hurts to see them sick.

Until this past Christmas holiday, I had never heard of bladder stones. But we were at our house in Ft. Myers for a couple of weeks and one of our Shih Tzus developed a bladder infection. As luck would have it our veterninarian in Gateway was not available so we had to take her to an emergency clinic in Ft. Myers. The reason she developed the bladder infection was because she also had stones. After we returned back to Maryland she was operated on to remove them. Our vet told us that we had to be more strict with her diet. Easier said than done! When this thing looks you in the eyes, just as you are putting food in your mouth, it is hard to resist accommodating her!

This is our female, we have her brother from the same litter as well but he is tan and white. My wife and the the female, Maggie, are at the local hospital tonight. They have been in an experimental program for about two years. It is called "Healing Paws." The dog has a hospital badge with her picture on it that gets attached to her collar. It is the same badge that the rest of the hospital employees wear. The first time I saw it on her, I laughed so hard it brought tears to my eyes. Anyway, she is really good with the patients, and if it helps the kids in the Peds ward, that is all that matters.

Anyway, I hope your Dobe gets better!

I had a kidney stone attack Tues. May 11, 04, had to have 3 surgeries and was out of work for 5 months. Most painful thing I've ever endured and that includes a completely shattered shoulder from a motorcycle accident.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. We're beat. Prince was up all night, uncomfortable and that kept me up. He's resting now so I'm trying to do so also. There were 3 stones, one was quite ragged. He's eating and drinking and peeing, bloody of course. His brother Sam wonders what's wrong with Prince...:confused:
