gearing on a 2003 z06
 
Hey guys, new to the forums, been lurking a while, figured i'd ask here becuase I cant find this anywhere else.

My question is this, I'm looking to buy a 2003 z06, and had a question on the gearing. What are the top speeds for each gear on this car? Someone also told me that 2nd and 3rd are "racing gears" is this true? Thanks in advance for any comments!

Darn! I know I've seen that someplace a while back, but went looking for it myself and couldn't locate the info. I wonder if it may be in the service manuals? All kinds of goodies in those books....

What's interesting about C5 Z06 gearing is that the percentage drops between first through fourth gears are exactly the same. Then there is a very small drop to fifth, and a larger drop to 6th. Standard 6-speed gearing shows the "normal" progressively smaller drops as you go up through the gears, barring the big drops to the over drive gears. In short, Z06 gearsets are better for road racing, standard gears are better for drag racing or top speed.

The real hot deal setup for straight-line is the standard gearing, and then get new overdrive gears. You can have a steady progression upward with no big drops that way. If/when I get my tranny redone, I will likely do that.

Standard MM6:
1-2/2-3/3-4/4-5/5-6
33%/27/23/26/32

Z06:
30%/30/30/16/33

MM6 with G-Force OD set # 2 (0.8, 0.7):
33%/27/23/20/12.5

they're the same gearing? even though the 03 has about 40hp more?

If you want to know the top speed, you have to go out and measure it with a particular car. Gearing charts don't mean diddly. Stock C5s all top out about the same, 165-175, coupes a little faster than Z06s (better aero and gearing). Modified cars go faster. How much? Depends on the car.

not the top speed.. the top speed for each individual gear..
