Sheriff's Wife Among Four Dead in Shooting
AP
MARIANNA, Fla. (Jan. 31) - Gunfire erupted outside a sheriff's house Tuesday, killing the sheriff's wife, a deputy and two suspects, authorities said.

Jackson County Sheriff John McDaniel was involved in the incident but was not injured, said State Attorney Steve Meadows. It wasn't known whether he fired any shots.

Details were unclear Tuesday, but the incident did not appear to be random, Meadows said. He would not discuss a potential motive.

Authorities do not believe there are any other suspects, but more than 100 deputies were searching the area as a precaution, he said.

News reports said the sheriff's wife was shot by the two suspects when she pulled into her driveway.

She had noticed a suspicious car following her as she drove home, the reports said. The suspects also fatally shot a deputy who responded to the scene, reports said.

The sheriff's wife died at a hospital, and the suspects died at the scene, Meadows said.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Office declined to comment Tuesday night.

Marianna is in the Florida Panhandle, northwest of Tallahassee

At least that part went right:(

It's getting pretty weird these days. I hope you all have CWPs and know how to handle a gun. I won't leave home without one.

I won't leave home without one.
+1

Terrible story :nonod: . God bless Deputy Altman and his family. So good to hear the perps died at the scene. Hope all the Jackson County cops put a round in them.

Before I moved to Pensacola I was a cop over in Panama City. Bay County is just next door to Jackson Co. so I had met several of the deputies there at schools and such. Even though I've been out of law enforcement since 2000 my heart absolutely broke when I heard about it last night...so senseless when these things happen. I lost a friend in the line of duty and I can tell you that the responding deputies that actually took out the pieces of crap are going to need lots of time to heal....they all will.

On another note....and certainly not to second guess what Mrs McDaniel did...but one thing to keep in mind...one thing to make sure your wife and kids know...IF you EVER think that you are being followed...or if you know you are (road rage type incident)....NEVER go home....do NOT get out of your car. If you have to drive around until the other person loses interest, do it...use your cell phone and call 911...arrange a place for a marked patrol car to meet you...they WILL do it...just do everything that you can to remain safe.

By the way...the deputy's name is Mike Altman..This poem was was printed on the back of the program at my friend's funeral service...I thought it was appropriate....I'm not going to lie...for me it is hard to keep a dry eye when reading...it only comes second to hearing the bagpipes.

God bless Deputy Altman.

"A Part of America Died"

Somebody killed a policeman today,
and a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect,
will be buried with him at his side.

The suspect that shot him will stand up in court,
with counsel demanding his rights.
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids,
and spend many long, lonely nights.

The beat that he walked was a battle field too,
just as if he'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
to his name they will add a gold star.

Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
a cop put his life on the line.

Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
and he stands at each new rookie's side.
He answered the call, of himself gave his all,
and a part of America died
