Hey Steve, we went to Nashville in 2016, and the area called "12 South" seemed to be an area of choice for musicians. It seems to be a "higher rent" district and appeals to the musicians. We only went to one place in 12 South, and it was called The Frothy Monkey. We went there for breakfast one morning. They have other locations too, but we only went to the one in 12 South. 12 South gets it's name from the fact that 12th St. South runs thru (pretty much) the center of the area, and there seem to be a bunch of "fun" places to go in and around that area. It's far enough out from downtown to lose some of the "touristy" image, but close enough to get to quickly. They said that in the 2 or 3 weeks prior to our visit that Keith Urban, Nichole Kidman, and Reese Witherspoon had been in to The Frothy Monkey. But, who knows for sure........! Whatever you do, just enjoy Nashville for what it is, and if you happen to see someone famous, chalk it up to being a good day. As for the amateur musicians, they are all probably hanging around the bars, restaurants, and clubs in and around downtown hoping to get a chance at playing in one or more of them. Competition seemed to be fierce among the amateurs. Go clubbing one night, or taking cruise on the General Jackson, would probably be your best bet to see amateur musicians, with clubbing rating higher than the river cruise. Don't like the entertainment while clubbing.........? Go to a different club! Not so easy to do on a cruise..........! Have fun nonetheless!
Andy
