Default Tach quit

OK,OK,OK so see I go out and start "Goldie" to make sure the newly installed fuel line is not leaking. A tweak here and everything is dry. So I go for a drive and notice the tack is shooting me a bird as the needle sits perfectly on ZERO. No bouncing, no crazy swings, nodda, nothing. Awww life is good when you own a 36 year old Vette. I promptly come home and disconnect the tach cable from the dist. Cable is not broken. I gently tug to make sure and even get some white lithium grease into the end (at least) of the cable, reconnect said cable and start the car. Tach bounces wildly for a few moments then, once again, shoots me the proverbially bird and falls back to zero.

Tach head and needle seem to function properly, cable does not appear to be broken but damn thing just doesn't work. I know a gear exists in the dist. but I'm unsure of what to replace first, nor do I know how much of a PITA it is the take the dist apart to replace the gear.

Any experience with this dilemma out there?

Ken
