Default Do you go to cruise-ins?

Two recent posts got me thinking about the lack of Vettes at cruise-ins. One post was lamenting the summer doldrums with no events to go to and the other post thought coffee and cars was a great idea, car enthusiasts getting together, being able to come and go as you please. Cruise-ins are as old as the car itself and are the backbone of the car culture. The cruise-in was even immortalized by the movie "American Grafitti". I have been going to cruise-ins since the late 50's. Before I had a d/l I would hitch a ride with someone who did. We had two drive-ins in Worcester, MA, where we hung out on a nightly basis and to quote the old saying, if you weren't there, you were square.

Personally, I prefer cruise-ins to shows for a couple of reasons. They are shorter, 3-4 hours or less and you aren't expected to stay till the end, they are free or $5 at the most, they are more relaxed because everyone isn't obsessing over their cars and there is a greater variety of cars to see, many under construction. I just like to hang with motorheads and not worry about what some judge thinks about my car. I'm happy with it and that's all that matters to me.

So what is all this rambling leading up to? I'm curious as to why Vette owners don't go to cruise-ins. If you do, where do you go and if you don't, why not?

Default I do not...

Why? Because of our job, and because there doesn't seem to be any around here.

I guess that's why some join a Club, in order to participate in their cruise ins.

In Ohio I went all the time.... 100's of cars would fill almost 1/2 of the baseball stadum parking lot If you drank all you had to do was keep it in your car, Vendors sold food & the police kept a close watch on things. once in awhile an Idiot would show-up but the crowds usually kept everyone under control so we wouldn't get shut down.........

Then I moved to Tallahassee & it seemed like the same 15-20 cars would show-up every time. I got bored & quit going

Hopefully Tampa will be more fun

I tried the local Corvette Club when I first bought my car
Talk about getting snubbed!!! they didn't just not talk to me.... they flat IGNORED me so I never returned. When a few of the members found out I was a Corvette Mechanic at the Chevy dealer they asked me to join & I politely told them why i would NOT join there club!!

Well, tell you what. The next cruise in for the club will be Saturday the 21rst (my birthday, coincidentally). Come on by, and even if no one else will talk to you, I will. I've only been to two of them myself, and have to admit that it is not easy to break the ice there. Not sure why that is, but it just seems that many people are reluctant to speak unless spoken to.

Maybe I can get Connie to plan a surprise birthday dinner for me somewhere and you are welcome to join us.
