Default CD "No Disk" Error

I am getting a “No Disk Loaded” or “No Valid Disk Loaded” error on my CD player. This is the in dash single disk player in a 2008 ZO6 with 2LZ and NAV. I mostly listen to audio books on CD.

The CD player used to play music disks and book disks without any issues. Then the CD player would start to forget where it was in the book and would start the disk over from the beginning after the car had been shut off. When new it would open the book right where it was playing when the car was shut off.

Next, sometimes the player wouldn’t acknowledge the book disks when the car was restarted and would display the error when I tried to play it. If I reloaded the disk the player would usually recognize it and start over from the beginning. It still played music disks without error.

Later, it was difficult to get the player to recognize the book disk at all, even after reloading it several times. It still played music CDs OK.

Now it hardly ever recognizes a book CD even after several tries at reloading it. It sometimes takes 2 or 3 tries to get it to recognize a music CD.

For a while it seemed to help if I cleaned the disks before trying to play them. That doesn’t help any more. I have even tried waxing them to fill in any scratches and that doesn’t help either.

Once the player recognizes that there is a disk in the drive it plays just fine.

I’m not an audiophile so I don’t have a head cleaning CD. Does anyone have any experience with these? Do you think it would do any good to buy one and give it a try or would I be better off taking the car to a specialist? The car is beyond the 36 mo. bumper to bumper warranty so I’m not inclined to take it to a dealer. My experience in the past has told me the dealer just removes the unit and sends it somewhere leaving a hole in the dash until it gets back 6 weeks later.

Is there anyone in the area that I can trust to remove it and do quality repair work on the unit?

My neighbor works at Maxium Audio on Dale Mabry (813)887-2647. He may know I can give you his number and when you call tell him Mickey sent you.

Good to hear from you again Lloyd. Been busy at work but stated doing alot of the cruise ins again. Saw a black C6 last night at DQ and thought it was you.

Default CD Error Corrected

Well, I think I have the error problem fixed.

I did a lot of research on the internet regarding the "No Disk" CD error. It seems that it doesn't take much to put the CD reader "eye" out of commission. I read one post that compared a speck of dust on a CD reader with a bolder in your swimming pool.

As a first step someone suggested using compressed air to clean the eye without disassembling the drive. You don't want to use air from your air compressor because it probably contains contaminants or oil. I used an electronic duster that I use to clean computer components. I put the little plastic straw on the head and shot air into the CD slot. I moved the nozzle back and forth across the CD slot a couple of times spraying air everywhere inside the drive.

First I tried a music CD and it played on the first try. Then I tried several audio CDs from a book I borrowed from the library. They worked first time every time. I used the ZO6 when I ran errands today and shut the car off several times while the CD book was playing. The player remembered where I left off on the disk and picked back up there every time.

It appears the problem has been fixed with a very simple solution.

Mickey, thanks for the reference to the audio shop and your neighbor. I'll keep that information on file just in case I still need it.

Lloyd
