Basically, route 98 from Perry, FL all the way west to pretty much the intersection of route 319 south is pretty desolate and uninspiring. Logging trucks mostly rule the road and it is very easy to let your speed get away from you. But when you are flying down the road getting drowsy from the swamp land scenery, VERY suddenly you come up on a little town called Newport which is right where the St. Marks River intersects route 98. The speed limit DROPS suddenly to 35 miles per hour and most often a patrol car will be sitting beyond the rise of the bridge over the St. Marks River. There was even a blurb in the newspaper about the local LEO giving a speeding ticket to actor Dan Aykroyd right at this spot rather recently. Warnings are not the rule here, so expect a speeding ticket if you miss that single 45 mph sign before the 35 mph one whizzes by you.
Coming from the west you will come around a very sharp bend in the road, that also puts you at risk of flying through this short stretch of road that likely pays the bills for police enforcement via the speeding fines.
