Sports Cars: 2007 Chevrolet Corvette and 2007 Mazda MX-5
The Chevy Corvette is America's sports car. Most steak-eating, beer-swigging, baseball-loving Yankees already love the 'Vette for its sexy looks and tire-shredding V-8 soundtrack. But the fiberglass masterpiece is actually a fair road trip companion. Think of it: you can grab your honey and head off towards your favorite back road for a long weekend - there's plenty of space for your stuff in the surprisingly roomy trunk. The interior is awful, but you won't notice because you'll be carving up the roads, looking for scenic turnouts and antique shops. And when the weekend comes to a close with the smell of burning rubber still lingering in your nostrils, you'll appreciate the 27 mpg you attained on the freeway back home.
Any list of sports cars would hardly be complete without at least a mention of the Mazda MX-5. Since it was introduced in the late '80s, Mazda has sold buckets of Miatas to happy sun-seekers who appreciate its simple, back to basics approach to driving enjoyment. Even our own Senior Editor Joe Dematio had this to say about the latest MX-5: "For the pure pleasure of driving on a twisty road, you don't need any more power, grip, chassis, or cabin than the Miata provides. This is a car that still sticks to the original model's design ethos of 'oneness with horse and rider.' The Miata just feels right." See, just driving an MX-5 is a vacation in and of itself.
