Ft Myers this Weekend

I've been there many times, my older brother lives there. Been on the train as well - it was fantastic!

I can most likely come up for a meet.

We are staying at a Fairfield Inn and should be arriving there about noon.

There is an Irish Pub across the street, where we are planning on having lunch then hang out by the pool the rest of the day till dinner.

Let me know when and if you have an address and I will try to make it up there! Sounds like a good time.

Been many years since the wife and I have been to Sanibel. I would bet it is now nothing at all like we knew it. Used to be a great beach to snorkel for shells. I heard that one of the hurricanes separated Captiva from Sanibel. Is that still the case?

Never been there myself!

It's been several years since I was on Sanibel, but it is one of the most beautiful cays in FL. Planners kept commercial signage to a minimum and restricted the building codes in such a way as to keep the island very nice. Great getaway place. I used to take the boat from Sarasota down to a small resort on Captiva and lay around, fishing, swimming, and enjoying the great places to eat down there.
I recently ask about a certain restaurant on Captiva and was told the last hurricane messed the place up pretty bad. I hope the area is still as nice as I remember it.
Another thing I have done while in Ft. Myers is to take the Thomas Edison Home/Henry Ford Home tour. I'm somewhat of a history buff and have enjoyed the tour several times and look forward to doing it again soon. Very interesting history, architectural, horticultural, experience.
I'd love to meet you guys down there but once again, prior plans will keep me from it. Have fun! I'll catch up with ya'll sometime soon I'm sure:) ..........Tom

Rich,

Hurricane Charley went right through the middle of Captiva, but it did not separate Captiva from Sanibel. It certainly raised havoc with the vegitation on both islands, but more so on Captiva.

I know the Bubble Room (restaurant) was damaged and took a number of months before they re-opened. But I have been there a few times since, and cannot see any evidence of the damage that they had.

I don't know what it was like when you and your wife were last there, but my wife and I enjoy it and try to get over there every trip down to our house in Ft. Myers.

yep, it was "The Bubble Room". First time there was about 18 years ago. Best food in S. Florida with the exception of a barbecue rib place out on US41. Best ribs I've ever had, and I have lived a good part of my life in Virginia and North Carolina. I heard all the big trees surrounding The Bubble Room are gone:nonod: :icon_cheers: . Ft. Myers, Sanibel, and Captiva; great place to visit and relax:)..........Tom

Hey thanks the Bubble Room sounds cool, I may have to go there for lunch on Sunday!

Make sure you save room for dessert. Their cakes are fabulous and they can't get more than six or seven slices out of the cake. The portions are huge!

You can't miss the Bubble Room. When you get towards the north end of Captiva, you will come to a 4 way stop. At the NE corner, you will see a pick fence with bubbles painted on it. That's it. If you want a nice look at the Gulf and maybe a beverage before or after lunch. Make a left at the 4 way stop go a couple of blocks to the end. You will be at the beach and the Mucky Duck. Great sunset location!

Crap don't tell me I missed it! Was doing a photo shoot today with a Ford GT, Camaro RS, 3 Vettes, and some other cars...

I just came back fro Sanibel/Captiva last night. Was there Saturday and Sunday (5-20/21-06) to spread my dad's ashes in the gulf.

He was born and raised there, and the family heritage go back to the 1800's there. The GREEN FLASH restaurant is on the property where my uncle T.M. Wiles bar and grill, "Timmy's nook" once stood. The property across the street (the little cracker box house) was my aunts where I spent a LOT of time during the summer.

My great grandmother was the first postmaster there in the post office on Captiva which is now a cottage (Post office "sweet").

We went out to Redfish pass and did the memorial there (Thanks go out to Dave Jensen and the Jensen Brothers Marina and out skipper LARS for the comped boat and skipper!  )

Anyway, didn't mean to get off track here.

The trees on captiva are doing ok. It's thinned out a little, but still very beautiful.
We ate at the Bubble Room for dinner saturday and at the Green Flash for lunch on Sunday.

Stayed at the Island Inn (Highly recommended for a peacful retreat) on Sanibel.

I'll do a little write up on the whole trip in the next couple of days.

Sanibel and Captiva......God little piece of paradise on earth......

Shadow, condolences for the loss of your father. Lost mine not so long ago. Dad is one soul in our life that can't be replaced. Sounds like the memorial was what you and he wanted. Very nice, I wasn't so lucky to have such a nice memorial, but that's for another forum or thread. Anyway, sorry to hear of your loss.
Very interesting personal history of you and your family on Captiva/Sanabel. I love it down there and it remains to be one of my favorite getaways. Great place! The best to you and your family!..........Tom
