Well that would make sense. Except that I don't believe that in normal running conditions the coolant will EVER get below the opening temperature of the thermostat while the engine is running. Not unless perhaps you are up on Alaska or something in the winter months. I believe the ONLY time a thermostat will close is after the engine has been shut down and the motor and coolant have cooled sufficiently for that to happen.

I was thinking of asking if anyone knew what the actual CLOSING temperature of a thermostat is, since it does not necessarily HAVE to be the same temperature it opens at. But in thinking about it, I guess it really doesn't matter at all. Since there is no FLOW with the coolant, it doesn't really matter what temperature it closes at when the engine is shut down.
