Default 427 engine (part 2) - RHS block

Figured it was time to make a new thread, since the other one was becoming a saga, and with the new RHS block, well, it's now going to be a new and HOPEFULLY much better story.

The latest is that Bryan at LME received the block Monday afternoon and inspected it early on Tuesday. He said it looks GREAT. The game plan is to have the block shipped out by the end of next week to Chris at XtremeMotorsports. I'm guess that means the block will probably show up in Blountstown by the end of the week of the 26th. Which means Chris will probably (again HOPEFULLY) be putting it all together starting on the first week of May.

Got an email from Bryan saying that everything is looking good on the build and he expects to finish up on Friday. It might not get packed up to ship out till the following Monday, however. Well that gives me a couple of more extra days to finish up the polishing on the cradles, I guess...

Rich, take the few extra days to oil the hinges and rollers on the garage doors, sweep all of the dust out of the garage, seal the concrete again, clean the windows, get rid of the cobwebs, and convince all of the reptile "squatters" in there that should move elsewhere.
It'll all get there in good time, then you'll be sorry for all the horsepower. More HP = new tires, more gas, speeding tickets, more oil changes, and more mods...............and the list goes on.
BUT.........it will probably sound like a bear, and go like a cruise missle on steroids

Last week Connie and I were getting ready to take a drive down to south Florida and I was removing some keys from the keyring that I didn't want to carry with me on the trip. So I'm staring at this key that I didn't recognize till it finally dawned on me that it was to the C5Z........... Sheesh........ I'm probably going to have to relearn how to drive a stick shift all over again...

Well damn!

This starter I just installed has died. Turn the key and there is nothing more than just a single click coming from the solenoid. Started up a couple of times just fine prior to that. Actually have the car on the lift, so that is lucky. I found that I could recreate that drivetrain noise with the car off of the tires and the emergency brake engaged, so I was going to have Connie help me with this. I showed her how to feather the clutch while in gear to make the noise happen (which even now was still intermittent), and then raised the lift so I could get underneath with the camcorder to try to identify exactly where the noise is coming from.

So while Connie was getting used to the clutch engagement, she stalled the engine. When she tried to start the car again, nothing but the solenoid click mentioned above. So I got into the cockpit and tried myself. Took the emergency brake off, made sure the rear wheels would turn when the transmission is out of gear, etc., and it appears to definitely be the starter.

I contacted RockAuto to see if they will do anything about this. I was gone on vacation the entire month of May, so that starter doesn't have any more than maybe a dozen or so startups on it. But their 30 day guarantee is long gone, of course. So we'll see what they say.

I have to admit I was a bit concerned that the starter I got did NOT say "ACDELCO" on it like the one I removed. I think if I have to buy another one, I'm going to insist on seeing that on the one I get.

Well, at least this didn't happen while the car was out somewhere meaning I would have to get it towed. But still............ So much for buying what is supposed to be a good brand name item.

I guess all "manufacturers" these days are simply buying from Mexico or China and just slapping their label on the crap.

I got a response from RockAuto and the starter is under manufacturer's warranty. So once I pull it out and box it up, once they get a notice that the shipment is on it's way, they will ship out a replacement.

I just hope the replacement last longer than this one did. Of course, I'm just assuming it's a starter problem. I'll know more when I pull it out, I guess.

The more I think about it, the less thrilled I am about just getting the same sort of starter sent to me and putting what might be just another piece of crap on my car. I'm going to see if I can get a refund instead from Rock Auto. If that fails, then I may just go ahead and get a *new* aftermarket starter (perhaps MSD if it looks like it will fit OK) and just sell the replacement ACDELCO starter for whatever I can get for it.

So we'll see how things look when I pull that starter out. I tried the test with having the headlights on when I tried the starter, and since the headlights don't dim, the battery seems OK. Can't see any reason why the engine would have locked up just by stalling it trying to create the drive train noise, but who the heck knows? Maybe Murphy pissed into one of my engine cylinders? So maybe I'll see if I can turn the engine just to make sure before pulling the starter. If the engine is locked up, then no sense pulling the starter off. It's bonfire time!
