Planning Route to Tail of the Dragon

als2052

Road Trip!
In mid October, visiting Bowling Green and on way back to Fla, plan to do the Tail and Cherahola. What is the best route to take to west end of Tail.

This is from the official Tail of the Dragon website.

HINT.... If you want to find the Tail of the Dragon use MAPQUEST or other mapping programs to get to the nearest towns which are Robbinsville NC, and Maryville TN. Then follow US129 to the state line (NC/TN).

The map that they have is not very good. Do a Google map from Bowling Green to Robbinsville, NC and you'll get the exact map that I described below.

My wife and I actually stopped in Maryville, TN on the way home from BG last month. Best way is once you get into Nashville take I-40 East to I-75 towards Knoxville. There is an exit for I-140. Don't know if it's considered south or east, but it heads in that direction. Go to Hwy 129 and head south. Hwy 411 joins in and you'll need to get back off on 129. Tail of the Dragon is 129, so just keep going until you hit it.

At the eastern end, look for Wayah Rd (it'll take you to Franklin, NC)

It's just as twisty and ~30 mi long!

Heading there next weekend with two of my buddies. We have a cabin in Bryson City that we rent. We typically do the scenic thing with the lady companions first and then we do the Dragon the next morning.

If you never been and plan on going...just be sure to do it after you are WELL RESTED. DO NOT ride the dragon after a long ride. You are asking for trouble!

During our last visit, 2 of us slayed the dragon and one of us got bit on the back side. Nothing major just a broken timing chain, a little loss of pride and a lot of CHING$$ to get it towed back to Florida. All in all It's a blast everytime! If you are driving more than 35mph on the Dragon, you are hauling A$$ and you better know what you are doing! We all have C5 ZO6's then with 3.90 & 4.10 gears. It would be interesting to see how the C6 Z does with such a TALL 1st gear. We will never need 2nd gear which scares me but I'm not there to tear anything up, so I'll be in and out of it for sure.

On our way back, we typically make a stop by the Atlanta track to see what's happening. We here there may be some activities going on that weekend, so we'll see. Maybe we can do a nice "CRUISE LAP" :reddevil: if the track is rented by a club.

Mark! What's up Bro??

All you need to do is say the word and we can make it happen. Make a 3 or 4 day weekend out of it next year.
