Doesn't sound to bad to me on the surface. If you make more then you owe more. Makes the big companies like Microsoft, Disney, FL Power (or whomever is your electric privider), Insurance companies.... They make more so they pay more. I know it's not perfect but I hate the tax breaks for the huge companies that keep getting bigger and bigger each quarter.

Nope. There doesn't need to be the complication of corporate taxes, estate taxes, deductions, exclusions, refunds, etc., etc. FLAT tax for each and every INDIVIDUAL citizen.
If someone has the ability, initiative, good fortune, or whatever to earn 200 BILLION dollars, then more power to them. With the tax structure the way it is now, what is the incentive to earn more when you just pay more of it into taxes as you go into a new bracket? If you get a second income, most of it will just go into your increased taxes, so why bother?
No, I'm never going to be elected for office to implement such a thing, but when people say "FLAT TAX" they are not talking about any such thing.

Unfortunately, anyone who breathes a word about a true restructuring of this convoluted tax "system" or a review or downsizing of the Infernal revenue service will NEVER get elected
I guess the bright side is this.
If you can't (or won't) do them yourself, there's always the the CPA's and Tax services. This keeps at least some people gainfully employed during tax season.
If you do them yourself, you'll need a computer, paper (lots of it apparently ), ink, etc...this serves to keep the computer and support industry in $$$...
And of course, either way, you'll need either lots of migrain medicine....thus supporting the pharmaceutical companies and drug stores.
If you decide to protest and NOT file, you'll keep the feds employed (a bunch of them), as well as the legal beagles.
If you win....(not likely), the lawyers win. If you loose....well, you'll keep the soap industry in business.....
And as a last resort, when there's nothing left,...well, you'll support the firearms and ammunition industry....but either way you go, you'll only do it once....

How much you want to bet that you will have to show it as income on your 2008 tax return and therefore have to pay taxes on the tax rebate?

Probably so.
It's not "free money" like some people believe. It's more of a loan on next years tax return........

Doubt it. In 2001, the tax stimulus we received wasn't taxable the following year.

Not that I could find the tax forms to prove it, but I believe it was. I seem to recall that I got a letter and a bill from the IRS the following year because I did not include that "stimulus check" amount on that year's tax form.
