Default comparing water treatment system components and cost,

I live out in the sticks, and we have well water, not city water,
as a result, I'm forced to replace my old water treatment system, as its worn to the point its basically on its last legs or failing so (its 15 years old) and I don,t think its worth repairing
I need to be comparing water treatment system components and cost, so if you have experience in what to look into and costs etc>
[please post related info]

Is your water actually "bad"?

We live out in the sticks as well, and have a well, but do not use anything in the way of an overall water treatment system. Now we do have a little water distillation system that we use for some stuff (not to mention that the insectivorous plants I have need it when rain gets sparse), but all in all we don't seem to have any ill effects in 20+ years this way.

my water leaves rust stains over time and smells a bit faintly like sulfur

Where in Florida are you located? A long while back Connie and I spend the night in Palatka, and the water there was terrible. You smelled worse after a shower than you did before. And we brushed our teeth with just a tiny bit of toothpaste, no water.

So yeah, some places can have pretty bad ground water.

Fortunately there are a lot of springs up here in Wakulla County, and the water here is actually pretty good. There was an existing well on our property when we bought it, so we just tapped into that for our water needs. A guy dropped a plumb line down it and hit water at 20 feet. And then let out the remaining 80 ft. of line, and never hit bottom. So yeah, we're probably living right on top of some vast underground lake.
