Things are really changing these days though. I was watching a documentary on thye Glouchester station the other night on of al things, the weather channel
About the "mayday" call from a tanker (turned out to be a basically bogus)

Yes, they were cracked and taking on water, but in a shallow shoal, with no where to sink!!!
Anyway, they sent a 40 boat and IIRC a 44 torescue the tanker crew in some of the worse weather I've ever seen on the water.
There was also a guy, a pilot boat captain, (I can't recall the name right now) who was well respected among the CG groups there and a former Coastie, who had assisted in numerous rescues and had received numerous awards from the CG
One of the CG vessels lost power and nav and were DIW in massive sea conditions.
This guy loaded up and headed out to assist the CG crew.
The crew got the engines back and made it to a nearby port.
The pilot boat capt. lost nav and was having a real tough time, but from his radio comms, you could tell he was trained
Cool, calm, collected.
Bottom line...he and his crew lost thier lives trying to save one of his own (the Coasties in distress)
I doubt he would have had it any other way
I guess once it's in you, it never goes away...
They said that since that time, the CG has changed it's outlook on rescues. I remember telling my Chief one time, that
the book say's we have to go out...it doesn't say we have to come back
...thats changed now...Thank goodness!
