August President’s Message

August is here and so is the rain…but we are used to it and our friends up north are not. They are getting rain, humidity, and flooding…we hope everyone is safe and dry. (I’ll bet they wish they were back here in sunny Florida.)

Our meeting was a good one, and we signed up two new members, Rich and Joyce Mulligan. We are looking forward to all the new events that are coming up soon….PLEASE READ YOUR NEWSLETTER.
If you have any questions or comments, please let us know. Our Concourse for January is on track, as is our Edison Festival of Lights show in February. To all our birds, come home safe and soon, we are looking forward to getting back into full swing again.

Judy Galewski

Answers to last month’ Trivia
1. 1981 – both Bowling Green, Ky. and St Louis, Mo.
2. 1983

Note: for answers to this month’s trivia questions, search the newsletter.

William L. Mitchell
Part II

Now after 10 years it was time for the “all-new” Corvette to emerge. Bill Mitchell suggested its surname – spelled as two words and with essential design themes from his svelte Stingray racer.

The productions split window Sting Ray rocked the sports car worlds and was a sell-out success. Each year after (up to the swan song 1967) Mitchell’s Sing Ray set new sales record.

In those years as Mitchell cemented his position new ideas began to percolate. The new “ladder-type” from design with 5 crossmembers, independent rear suspension and halfshafts rear axle versus the old solid axle. Who can forget the dangling carrot of a mid or rear engine Corvette – Ah but never to appear. The increase costs of development and the dark thought of disrupting the sales numbers shut that idea down. There was even an idea of a four-seat Corvette.

All these ideas back and forth made Corvette what it was. The verdict was unanimously stated that the Sting Ray was for more advanced both ride and handling of anything being built in the United States.

In those days “show cars” were used to check the pulse of the public – the buyers.

The Mako Shark I – II were hot hits and became the bases for the new style of Stingray the C-3. These new designs met mixed reviews at first but held on to win everyone over.

William L Mitchell retired in 1977 and passed away in 1988.

Harold Hoover is doing much better and we
hope to see him and Peggy soon attending
one of our meetings.

If you are aware that one of our members is ill, just had surgery or a death in the family, please let your secretary know, we will put the information in the newsletter or e-mail our members, so we can all send cards to help cheer them up. Thank you
