FOB?

My wife and I were sitting in the lobby of the host hotel for the UCP tomorrow talking with a few people about all sorts of Corvette related stuff, and a question was brought up that no one could answer.

What does "FOB" actually stand for? I assume it is a acronym.....

Anyone know?

Freight On Board. It's a term used usually in shipping large items, usually via truck freight.

Normally quoted $2300.00 FOB Illinois.

That means cost, loaded in Illinois would be $2300.00. The buyer would be responsible for shipping, say to Florida.

Don't know how the word was "invented". Why is a house called a house? Dunno.

A key fob is a medallion used to identify a key ring or used as a starting place on a ring, frequently given as an advertising item. A watch fob is a medallion or ornament attached by leather strap or chain to a pocket watch to assist in locating and removing the watch from a pocket in clothing. Some were origionally coded or numbered to assist in return to the owner. The term is also used when referring to electronic security key devices.

Fob may also be a transitive verb meaning to deceive or cheat someone out of something they would want to do or materially wish for.

Yeah, I tried all the easy methods to find out what "FOB" might mean. Best I could come up with was "Full Of Beer". :lmao:

Yeah, was up early. Had a bunch of stuff to do and wanted to get an early start. Just got back from Home Depot. Have my weekend projects lined up.

BTW, I partially screwed up on my first "definition" of FOB. It's actually Free On Board.

Same idea. Has to do with shipping and shipping costs.

The term was actually coined by a GM engineer Michael Peterson who spent most of his early life in the Haight-Ashbury section of San Francisco. The original designer of the door lock remote was Bill Jensen. At a GM engineering meeting he introduced the idea of a keyless remote entry lock system with a handheld remote and the response from the ex-hippie Michael Peterson was " Far Out Bill". Hence the initials F.O.B. :crazy03:

Maybe it stands for Fiber Optic Bundle??? Or, by definition a "fob" is the small pocket within your regular front pockets of your pants. Another definition is a short chain or ribbon with a medallion attached that hangs from a pocket.

I don't know about your guys, but my fob always hangs out of my pocket. Maybe this was the thought in mind when they named the RKTs, "FOBs"?!
