The calls starting coming in just before 9:30 a.m. today -- about 20 foreign sports cars heading north on Interstate 75, near Charlotte County, traveling at speeds exceeding 100 mph.

Callers said the drivers were driving aggressively, whizzing through traffic.

As the calls continued to come in, Florida Highway Patrol troopers tried to plot the location of the group. Initially, they were at the 167 mile marker in Charlotte County; then motorists reported them at the 185 mile marker at Jacaranda Boulevard, in South Venice, while more calls put the convoy at the 198 mile marker in Sarasota County.

Troopers set up a speed trap in Sarasota County and clocked the cars going over 90 mph.

Four troopers managed to stop 16 cars in the convoy, all traveling in a tight group, en route to the Import Face-Off at the Bradenton Motorsports Park, according to the FHP. The group was stopped just south of Clark Road in Sarasota.

Troopers handed out 18 citations -- 16 for speeding, one for no proof of insurance and one for an expired driver's license.
