back up light????

one of my back up lights was out so i went to replace it. the side that worked had 2 filaments. both light when i press the unlock on the fob. the other side, that wasnt working, was a single filament. went to auto zone, got the light they said to use, sylvania bulbs part # 2057 . was a double filament. now the side that wasnt working works but only one filament lights up. it is much dimmer then the one that has always worked. any ideas?

I think that GM designed them to be interchangeable with the tail lights.
 
i can see that, but why does one side (with identical sockets) have both filments light up, and the other, only one light up?
 
I just went out and checked mine, they are the same brightness. I wonder if you got a bad bulb. Try switching them one side to the other.

Sorry it took me so long to get back on this.

Read back this post... The passengers side has a broken wire or connection if the bulb works on the drivers side.

Go from there.
 
there are only 2 wires going into each socket. ill have to put the power tester on each. i would assume power and ground. i actually made the wiring harness on my firebird formula a while ago and if i remember correctly the brake light sockets had 3 wires going into them. one ground, then one for each filament to be lit.
 
The GM service manual shows only 2 wires going into the socket as well. It also says that a 2057 is the correct bulb for the backup lamp. If you have 2 wires in each backup lamp socket, and both bulbs are 2057's, then I would be willing to bet that the side with both filaments lighting up is the problem one. Looks to me from the schematic that only one filament should be lighting up in each bulb. First guess would be something is wrong in the socket letting voltage get to both filaments when only one SHOULD be getting it. Don't know how to proceed from here as I've never had to get into that area. If the sockets are replaceable I would try that since everything that you've done so far points to one side always being the bright one. Sorry I can't be more help, but I just hit the limit of my knowledge about this problem. Good luck!

sounds good but originally both sides were equally bright, and now the dim side is so dim it wouldnt function as a backup light. this one has got me completely stumped. only thing i can think of is testing the voltage on each side this weekend.

OK,...tomorrow I am changing the oil in Deb's '01. I am checking the backup lights.
 
Check the ground wire to the dim bulb. I'd bet it's loose or getting a bad connection. 90% of all electrical issues are ground related. :banghead:

ended up working sat and sunday. coulnt turn down working at home for overtime. amidst that we had company so i didnt even get a chance to wash my car. maybe if i get home a decent hour some time this week. ill keep everyone posted
