Well, if it is legit then one possible reason is this.... They stop a suspected shoplifters car, they can prove some of the merchandise is stolen so they seize it all until they can find the victims. The victims don't come forward b/c they either don't know it's been stolen or they don't think there is any chance to recover it so they say they "won't bother the police". After whatever time period they set within the department (ie 6 months, 1 year, 2 years) they decide to clear out space in their property lock up and auction stuff out.
Here we have the departments sell off stuff like bikes, stereos stolen out of cars, tools stolen off of work trucks,,, and so on. The items are never claimed so why should the police hold them indefinetly? This may be a false auction, but it may also be legit. Google the name of the department and see what happens....
