In May, GM filed a trademark application for the word "STINGRAY" with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for use on "Motor land vehicles, namely, automobiles."

So, did they recieve approval?
All this should prevent is someone using the name Stingray" on another brand or model of car, kit or concept.
The word "Stingray" is a common word and common words can't be "owned."

It's true. The perennial best-selling car in Japan, the Suzuki Wagon R, has a Stingray trim level. It's mostly just badging and aesthetics, but apparently Corvette's concerned enough about the threat the 64 hp Japanese mini-minivan poses, at least to the image of the Stingray name.

Oh my F'in gawd!!!
You have
GOT to be kidding!?
What a band of pussies.
Do these clowns hear themselves?
They are "
AFRAID" of a 64hp Japanees import that's not even released in the US?!???
If that's the case, we have much more to be concerned with GM about than was once thought.
Better watch out Dave. I hear the Boogie Man is real too.
Don't forget to check under your bed at night

"We greatly value Stingray as a piece of Corvette's legacy....and we want to protect that," said Caldwell.

Horsecrap!
If Gm really wants us to believe it's about "protecting" anything other than thier pocketbooks, then they're full of crap!
Quote:
Although this doesn't mean we'll be seeing a split-window Stingray-badged Corvette in the future it also doesn't mean we won't. Either way, GM has the rights to the name

Give us a break will you Dave and the rest of GM?
If you're going to build it, let it out, don't let out the internals, just that the build is on the table, build the hype arouund the re-release, and sell the damned car. Jesus!
It's not like GM's building the next atomic ICBM jack!
Quote:
"It's not really indicative of any specific naming or branding decisions." Corvette PR man Dave Caldwell told us via email... "

Well of course not Dave.
But then if not, then why all the concern?
Quote:
When we did the semi-recent design concept, we discovered that we did not control the Stingray name to the extent we thought we should.

Oh, I forgot!
It's all about
CONTROL isn't it Dave?:rolleyes
I highly doubt this will stop the Japanees from including that trim level in thier lineup if they ever introduce thier little terror
into the US.
Besides, knowing the Japanees, "Stingray" may be the material it's upholstered in
