The general rule of thumb for any engine to increase horsepower is to improve airflow in and out. This can be done with a better carburetor, better intake manifold, headers, and less restrictive exhaust components for mostly bolt on stuff. More intrusive mods would be a new camshaft, and fully modified heads, or perhaps going to a fully modified crate engine completely.

Of course, adding more extreme add ons such as a supercharger, turbocharger, or nitrous are always options.

But bear in mind, the more power the engine develops, the sooner you will find weak links in the drive train.

That's the start of the emission years . Been there done that. My suggestion is leave it bone stock. For the money you end up spending on all the mods, you can get a 355hp crate motor direct from chevy. Sounds like a lot of $$ but think about it. I didn't!

I agree. If you are concerned with keeping it original, just pull the engine and store it. Chances are you'll never want to reinstall it though. Its cheaper to by a crate engine today than it is to build your own. Plus they have already done the research and know what combinations work best for each application. Be careful not to overpower your transmission and rear end. And make sure you buy from a reputable manufacturer.
