Tuning dad's car
After all this time(since december 2004) my dad finally asked for a cold air and basic tune for his Z16. So we visited him on Sunday, installed the cold air and did some very basic tuning. He always told me about how much faster this car is compared to his 71 LT1. I told him that he has'nt seen anything yet. We got finished, and he went out for a ride. Came back up his driveway with a big grin that couldn't be removed with a jackhammer. Monday evening he called and told that he was so much happier with the car. He reported a 1 mpg improvement and smoother running and acceleration. Now he wants headers..........think I gave him the bug! So much for keeping the Z16 stock.

Is a tune required to change fan on and off speeds?? Is a tune required for a CAI?? Can the mod be installed and work properly with out a tune?? S197 stangs need the tune to work with the mod. Is it the same with vette's?

Yes, the fans are changed in tuning. I really prefer tuning for cold air intakes, but many people have them without tuning. But to get the most out of any mod,Real laptop tuning is the key.

I installed a steeda 80mm CAI on my stang. I started the car and it had a sluggish acceleration. I then flashed a tune on the car and it fianlly responded. Is this the same as a vette'? So I should put a CAI on and flash after the install correct?? thx.

The Ford stuff is a little different. When you install a cold air kit, it will run just fine. Sometimes; although not frequently, it will throw a 1514 code due to more airflow than expected. Obviously the tune will not be optimized, but you will see a horsepower increase. Only a little tweaking to the airflow tables and it will be optimimum. Totally different than with your Ford experience.

I'd be interested in a tune. I had a vararam installed on my 07 vert. Please give me an idea as to how much time and cost is involved. I've heard great things about your work and passion when it comes to vettes. Mark

Greg,
When you tuned your Dad's Z16 did you also do any dyno pulls to establish a base line to work from? If so, can you give us the base numbers before the tune and numbers after?
I also have a Z16 that I bought from the original owner last December with 5900 miles. When I bought the Z it was stock except for the addition of a Blackwing. Seat of the pants this thing is pretty strong, but would it make sense to look at a tune and if so, what should my expectations be?
Thanks
Rich
