Default Console cup holder lid spring

So while I was on Ebay looking for replacement quarter panel reflectors, I stumbled on a few ads for the console cup holder lids. That reminded me that ever since bringing my car back home, the lid in my car would not act right. It just didn't have the apparent detent or whatever it is that would hold it opened and closed. So I figured there was just something broken on the lid and needed to be replaced. I went over to the garage to check it out to see what would be involved to replace that lid.

Well, it's not the lid that got broken, it's the spring itself underneath the lid. Or more accurately, the spring's mounting to the console itself got broken at the two mounting points.

Now, how the hell anyone could have broken that in the first place just baffles the hell out of me. I mean, that had to have taken some real ingenuity to get into that cup holder opening just to be able to break off those plastic tabs holding the spring in place. I can't even imagine what someone had to have done to accomplish that task. The door lid itself appears to be undamaged to me. It's difficult for me to fathom how people can be so careless with other people's property when it is left in their care. But par for THIS course, apparently.

So what this means is that I either have to buy a replacement console frame, or pull the frame out and see if I can fix it by drilling out those broken tabs and putting screws in to hold down the spring.

Well, it's certainly not a priority thing, but I guess I'll have this on the back burner for the day I feel real ambitious, or else have another reason to pull the console out, so I can try to fix this.

Well, not sure how brittle the plastic is there nor how thick. Would hate to split the plastic trying to pull screws with their threads through it.

Actually even when I hold the spring in place it doesn't apply any tension on the lid, so there may be something else going on. Perhaps the fingers are bent too far to the right. From what I can see, it serves two purposes: (1) hold the lid open, and (2) hold the lid closed. So I may have to bend it a bit to see if I can find the sweet spot before doing anything else.

Thanks!

You know, that's not a bad idea. I didn't even think of that.

Thanks!
