Its either a Florida Scarlet or a Scarlet King, either way you would have been ok. If the under belly is pale or blank and the circles dont encompass the whole body its a Florida Scarlet.

If you see one with a black nose start running thats the Coral snake.

Too bad, it would have made a nice pet.

From the pointed nose, it looks like a scarlet snake to me. Perfectly harmless. Pretty tough to keep as a pet though, because they are fossorial and have a specialized diet.

Yeah, it's normally "red touch yellow, kill a fellow", but don't rely on that 100 percent. Abnormal coloration and pattern is not all that unusual in any animal.... Make sure you KNOW what it is, not what you THINK it isn't..

Ok, you think I'm getting that close or staying long enough to see?

Well it's too small for boots or a belt and no fangs for a redneck belt buckle

Well this is the first time I've come across a snake in the lanai. The occasional lizard or frog but even those have been one here and there.

I will try to remember the red touch yellow but I think I would go the other way and not try to get a closer look.

So, lets say you come across a snake in your house or lanai and suspect it's something dangerous, what are you supposed to do? broom, shovel, magnum? I had a damn lizard get in the house and I have no idea if he left. He went under the fridge, then dishwasher and there was no way I was going to start pulling appliances for a lizard. But a snake, that's another story. Is there something we can feed them that will render them....verwy verwy still?

I found one of these that scared the crud out of me as-well, I'm not sure what I would rather see LOL. I tried to smash it but those things a super fast. I later learned it was a huntsman spider, and its a good thing i didnt smash it because if it was a pregnant female I could have released 1,000 babies in the house LOL. It was the size of my hand. You know you found a big spider when its eyes light up from the camera flash.

Kind of makes you long for those months of sub freezing temps to kill off those devil creatures.

OK, I'm done longing, time for a topless drive.
