Another stupid question....
....ok, I couldn't find it in the owner's manual so where is the tranny dip stick? Is it under the car?

I couldn't find which tranny you have based on your profile.
If you have a manual, there is no dipstick. If you want to check the transmission fluid level, park the car on a level surface, remove the transmission fill plug, and put you finger in the hole. The transmission is considered full if fluid is level with the bottom edge of the fill plug hole.
If you have the automatic, I would assume the dipstick would in the engine compartment. Since I only have a manual, and therefore do not know for sure, hopefully someone else will chime in with the information.

Sorry man, I guess that is an important detail. I have an auto and I can't find where the dumb dipstick is.

My manual is pretty vague on autos except tp say the fluid doesn't require changing. It says the procedure is so difficult it should be done at the dealer.

Sure. You could also rebuild your own engine. 
The transmission, auto or manual, is under the rear of the car. Hence no dipstick. There's a drain plug on the bottom and a fill plug on the top. At least on manuals, and I assume autos are similar. Getting fluid into the top fill plug is a royal pita, as you can imagine. When I had mine changed Greg used an old fuel pump to get it in, and was quite proud of himself for coming up with the timesaver. It did work a treat. I wouldn't dream of attempting it, pump or no, without a lift. This is one of those jobs where you just pay the man and be thankful. It's not much.

No dipstick on auto C5's.... There is a plug on the side of the trans pan. With the car sitting level, engine running, trans in park, Remove side plug and fill until exess fluid runs out. Be careful, as the plug is close to the exhaust. Not the best thing in the world, but this is not the only car out there that is done this way.

I recently had the fluid changed in my C-4. The tech disconnected the trans. cooling lines at the radiator and connected hoses going to a system that sucked out the old fluid and filled it with new fluid. Took maybe 30 minutes.
