9T8, I do know what you mean. These are not pets, they are members of the family and it is a terrible loss. About 12 years ago we lost our Dachshound and I could not believe how difficult that was for my wife and I. So much so that I told me wife I did not want anymore dogs because I just did not want to go through that again.
You are right that life goes on, and it has for us and our TWO Shih Tzus that are now 10 years old, and I dread the thought of the eventual loss of either of these family members! But the pleasure that they bring to us over their life time far out way the pain when they leave us!

I will have two rottweilers at the present moment. one is 6 months old and the other is 13 years old. The old guy has a growth that is in-operable in his left ear. I fear that the same decision might be coming to me as well. That will definitely be one of the hardest decisions in my life to date.
