Yeah, I think the ZR-1 raises the bar that future Corvettes are going to have to jump over. I think the mpg issue is just an engineering problem that can be licked. Heck, who would have ever thought years ago that a Corvette with 405 horsepower on tap could cruise at 32 mpg down the highway?
Personally I believe the oil companies and the auto industry are so closely connected at the hip that there has really been no incentive at all to increase gas mileage. Everything has just been lip service.
As for the ZR-1 itself, I was all prepared to rape my gun vault in order to get one. Until I actually saw the specs and photos. Close, but no banana.... Plus the word that the dealers are going to be lubing up the shaft for all those people who just HAVE to have one.

427", as far as I am concerned, is a *magic* number for the Corvette. When my C5Z engine finally gasps it's last breath, that is what is going in under the hood.
