Clutch fluid

I was on the "other" forum the other day and read about changing the clutch fluid? I had heard rumors about our 6-speed C-5's having "clutch fluid" but didn't give it much thought. Y'all got to remember I started driving in the 50's and a clutch had a big fork and spring, throwout bearing and that was it. But fluid? Well, I went out and bought a new can of Prestone DOT-4 (recommended) and went thru the steps. When I pulled off the cap, uggh, what a oily mess! After only two purges it was clean. Didn't take more than 20 minutes and half of that was making sure all surfaces were covered! So if you have a six-speed get ur done!!!

Just got the "Zee" and I guess "Andre" has a project this week-end at Insty-Tune. My last 3 Vettes were Automatics....My First 6 speed.

Hey Jim: Like I said, it's really easy. By the way it's DOT-3 not 4. Four has a higher boiling point and if you go to it you should bleed the entire system. So go to Wal-Mart and for about $3.00 get Prestone DOT-3. Cover the entire area (brake fluid eats paint) and take off the cap. The rubber insert will probably stay in the reservoir; so very carefully take it out, wipe it off and get a syringe and suck out the fluid. There isn't very much in there and when you hit bottom use a lintless towell to wipe it out. About 3/4 of the way to the top is a line; that is where you fill it with the new fluid. Put it back together and pump the clutch about 20 times. Look in the reservoir and if it isn't as clean as the new fluid, do it again. I only had to do it twice and it was clean and pure. That's it! Like I said it took more time to cover the area than to do the job. Have fun....
