Default Knock Sensor

Does anyone know if a knock sensor has to be mounted in the block in a water jacket. The reason I am asking is because I have heard that you can mount a new knock sensor on the engine motor mount by drilling and tapping it. If the sensor does not need to be in water to work then that would make sense to me. In effect the sensor is being grounded through the motor mount and the ecm is getting a clean signal from it. If so then the replacement of the sensor becomes a lot easier to do.

I would say it doesn't the knock sensor relocation kit for LS motors doesn't put them in water jackets. I think they ended up there because there was a hole there already.
