The radar detector "alibi"?

With that said, I take everything on a case by case basis. Some folks are cool and are polite and honest (that is the best way out of a speeding ticket) while others are a priK and argue that they could not have been speeding because the V1 did not go off, blah blah blah.

The new equipment we use is instant and the radar detector either never goes off or beeps once we are turning on the blue lights. The lasers are so quick that you'll never detect us and the airplane does not emit any type of detectable wave.

If I stop you and you are in a vette, your punishment will be about a 45 minute chat about cars and most likely a cup of coffee or lunch with me . . . chatting about cars . . . .

That's a very cool attitude. In all honesty, I think most officers will give you a break if you're honest with them. I can also say that every ticket I've gotten was well deserved.

I agree with C5STATETROOPER again. I have stopped people for 14 or 15 over and written them a ticket, and also stopped people for 20-25 over and cut them a break.

It depends on the attitude. We have discretion to write or warn. If I get a "What the hell did you stop ME for?" then I will write it on a piece of paper ( ie a ticket) to take with you so you don't ever forget again. LOL.

If I stop the fast guy who says "I'm real sorry, I know I was going X amount over the limit but I'm late for work" (or something else I've done too), then they MAY get a break. Sometimes 20mph and above is just too much. It all depends on the time of day/night, traffic, cooperation, driving history etc.

Back to the original question. If I see a radar detector they get a citation automatically for the speed they were clocked at. It's like it was said earlier that the ante was upped and they gambled but lost. If they got my cite I'm sure they got out of at least a few others. It's like a guy who says he didn't mean to do X crime but we prove it was all planned out. Putting a radar/laser detector in your car is like saying you "intend to speed", and it does not "appear" to be an accident. I know alot of guys I work with, and others on the traffic enforcement unit that feel the same way.

If you use a detector, and see a police car getting ready to stop you, toss it in the back hatch. (Just make sure he doesn't see you do it )

Disclaimer: I'm not a hypocrite. I do not cite people for the same things I do myself. No radar detector in my car. I also try to wait until the cars reach 20 mph over the limit on highways, and 15 over in residential before I stop them. I make a conscious effort to stay close to the limit myself in my Vette, but that right pedal is very easy to push....

Interesting. One of the guys asked me what I would do if I would happen to be going 120 mph and got nailed by a LEO for doing it. What would I say to him? Well I thought about it, and told him I would just point to the car and say "Sorry officer, but can you really blame me?" As he hauls me off to jail, I guess...........

Larry, I was pulled over a few years ago for doing 60 in a 45 by an officer whose job was strictly giving tickets. I think they are a little less likely to let someone off. I had a Camaro SS at the time, with a radar/laser detector. We had a nice conversation (30 minutes) about my car and cars in general. He didn't let me off completely, but changed it to "violation of a traffic sign". Less points.

I'm also very polite to any officer that has ever stopped me. I usually make sure the windows are rolled down and both my hands are on the wheel. If it's night time, I'll make sure my interior lights are on. I know they would have a flashlight anyway, but I try and make it as easy as possible. I have a few friends that are NYPD and I even went on a ride along in Tampa. (That was very cool) I realize you guys and gals have very stressful jobs and I would think that things like that would make it a little easier.

Speed in and of itself is not a crime. If you're doing 120 mph and passing other cars (ie moderate to heavy traffic) then you stand a good chance of being deemed "reckless". That's a willful and wanton disregard for the life safety and property of the others around you. That's a traffic misdemeanor, and could be a court date on a ticket or an arrest. The same result is that it counts as an arrest. The ticket you go home and an arrest you go to jail to post bond then go home.

If you're doing 120 mph at 3am and you aren't passing anyone then it's just an infraction. It's a ticket with a fine and points is all.

Speed if you're near another car who's speeding as well (more than just highway cruising etc when your really on it) could be interpreted as "racing" which is the same as the reckless driving in terms of punishment resulting in a court date or arrest. The difference is a possibility of having your DL suspended if found guilty of racing. Alot of the racers here go straight to the grey bar motel for a brief stay with the Sheriff's guys. They are real hospitable and even have room service! LOL

It does make it easier. Pass the word on to family and friends if the topic ever comes up. It is appreciated when people do as you described. It really sucks to walk up to a very dark tint job at night when we can't see in.

OK...tell me, where are we supposed to go to enjoy our cars? I would love to able to "let it happen" without fear of a ticket and all that goes with it...fines, points, increased insurance, etc. I've got 400 hp and have to drive it like an old man because I don't know where we can go to drive flat out. Sure there's the Silver State Classic in Nev. Have you seen the costs? As a newbie, it's close to $1,500 PLUS all the costs to get to Nevada and back. (www.silverstateclassic.com)
I'm open for where to go to "enjoy" my Corvette to max. I'm in Tampa area.

Well now, I'm sure when you spent $50,000+- on your new car you didn't expect special privileges on the highway. We vette drivers are held to the same standard as everyone else out there, maybe even a higher standard because we are responsible for driving a performance automobile. Don't get me wrong, I love driving my Z and there are times where me and the law might be at odds, but I have no illusions about what and where the law permits me to drive it hard. There are drag strips and road courses for those that really like to drive em hard and that is where it's permitted. If you try it on the highway, and don't hit a school bus, a pedestrian, or another car, then you will probably have to answer to John Law sooner or later. Is that a surprise to you?
