Unhappy Kissimmee Disabled veteran needs tuners help and advice

I am a 100% disabled veteran in the kissimmee area. I was working on an old car when I had to stop because of physical infirmity, and physical deterioration of muscles and central nervous system. So I traded this car which had any money I had tied up into it. My loving wife finally made me see I could no longer do (finish the car). I traded the car for a "Supposedly" fine shape 1990 corvette convertible. I took the guys word for it. I have always taken a man at his word. He said just started to get a miss in it. Nothing wrong with the car but he couldn't deliver he said because of no tag. I went to pick up the car, then escorted me to the tag office to immediately put it in my name. Then made me pay the tax on the car from when he bought the car from another fellow. Left the tag office to go home and found why he wouldn't drive it to me. About 45 minutes into the 90 minute trip home, the car overheated and left me broke down on 429 south in the middle of no where, no money on me, no AAA, no nothing. I am not rich and I live on a very limited disability income. But took most of what money I had left, borrowed money and $4000.00 later I still cannot get this running right. I have had it to three shops including a well known corvette shop in Orlando and the car still has the same problems. The car is missing at idle, (very badly) and barely stays running when first started. The other issue is that the transmission drops into 3rd gear way to soon. I have a 1990 corvette, convertible, 5.7, L98, 278 rear end. I have had replaced every ignition component possible (at shops insistence), swearing it was part of the problem. I had changed wires, plugs, injectors TWICE, ignition module, ignition coil....when I was given the car back with a huge bill and no better I was told that it is to be expected from this model due to the lean fuel memcal, by design by GM and that it was normal, was the way it is supposed to be. It runs absolutely TERRIBLE....The car had many electrical issues, parts missing, just found that the EGR was blocked off, I was supposed to get a complete hardtop with the convertible, but found it has NO HARDWARE, no seals on it. It rained and almost every weatherstrip on the car is leaking. I was able to buy the hardtop seals but now ....it's just so expensive....PLEASE is there someone, anyone out there that can just help me get my C4 running. I am so disillusioned over this. I have been trying desperately to reduce the stress in my life so I am not in so much constant pain. My wife says just to junk it, that it's not worth my health. I know this will be the last car I'll ever have, be able to buy...a me car. But, she may be right...I don't mind paying, but I honestly cannot afford to have another "remove & Replace" technician ever touch my car again. But I complained to the shop, same shop who dais its normal, NOW SAYS, oh, it's the heads. Now they want to charge me $1500.00 to remove the heads, send them out to be reworked by who knows who....and they want me to believe this will now magically fix the problem....I am at my wits end....Can anyone guide a new Vette owner in the right direction? My direct email address is jtroop1@cfl.rr.com Thanks for listening, and much thanks for any advice......
.........Jeffrey

Hi Jeffery,

With your year of car the overheating could very well be a warped head or blown head gasket. This would cause it to overheat after a short drive....or the water pump could also be bad, or the radiator could be clogged up, many things. If there is a leaking head gasket due to a warped cyl head the motor will run with a miss as well, but you can check easily to see by letting the car run and smelling the odor of the exhaust (as long as it has antifreeze in it). It will have a "sweet" or "candy" smell to it. If it smells like normal then it all boils down to air, fuel, & spark. As for the EGR delete, that is a common mod for better performance/efficiency as recirculating a portion of the exhaust gasses into the intake air charge results in less engergy being released per explosion and thus less power & economy. It WILL give a cleaner emmision, as the old air pumps that pumped air into the exhaust manifolds diluted the exhaust gasses.

The shifting, are you saying it shifts into 3rd to early? This would be most likely a simple adjustment of the TV cable for a 700R4, or a tweak in the tune for a 4L60E.

A bad running, missing motor is just a process of elimination, and NOT just throwing parts at it. Does it idle rough? You can use an insulated gripper to pull one wire at a time and listen for the RPM's to drop & the miss to get worse to determine where the culprit is. The cyl that is dead will show no difference in the idle when pulled off. Then it is determining if it is a bad wire? Fouled plug? Burnt or bent valve? leaking head gasket? A compression test will show how it compares to the rest, and from there a leak-down test to determine if it is leaking past an intake or exhaust valve, or past the rings.

Bottom line is ANY reputable shop that is truely staffed with master techs, and not the usual "parts changers" can diagnose and fix your issues so you can enjoy what is an awesome car. We are a drive from you, but could try & at least give a good diagnosis while you waited....or Antivenom is closer to you & Greg is very well versed with most any GM vehicle especially corvettes.

Good luck!
