im thinking about putting a 180 stat in my c5. is 180 a good temp for the ls1?

If you are like me and don't like the high temps that are designed into the vette, go with a 160 deg. stat. My cruising temps (on the C6) dropped from 198-200 to 178-180. The C6 heats to 215 in traffic so adjustment to the fans will be necessary. The C5 I had was the same. I am of the opinion that cooler is better...at least in FL.

Where did you get your 160 stat? I put in a Ligenfelter and my cruise temps are 187-189. I'd like a little lower.

The stat came from Ecklers and was ordered thru Auto XTC in Clearwater. So far it works good!

the only reason im not so quick to use the 160 is that on my lt1, i never got heat/defrost. just luke warm air. som im leaning towards the 180. 190 tems sound alright to me. its when i get up into the 215+. no good. from my understanding gm uses these higher temps to pass emission tests. the higher temps burn more of the residual fuel resulting in cleaner emissions. glad fl doesnt have to worry about that

Back in the old days, I used to run my GTO without a thermostat at all in place. Of course, I lived in Maryland at the time, and soon figured out that the winter months were a bear without it. It took FOREVER for the heater to start blowing even luke warm air.

A 180 stat will not keep your temps at 180, more like 195. You'll need a 160 to see about 180 at cruise.
