Default Someone must know what these are

There are 100s of these in my neighborhood scattered around within 100 yards of each other.

Are they just laying on the ground as if they fell off of a vine or tree, or are they attached to the ground? I've seen a type of vine that has something like that on it. I just call it a potato vine, but have no idea what it is really called.

They're just laying there. I thought they might be an egg of some kind. I can't remember seeing them before in the years I've been here.

I'll check next time I see them and see if there might be some of them attached to something hanging nearby.

If they are attached to the ground, they may be a form of puffball mushroom.

I checked one out this morning and it feels like a potato- heavy and dense.

I didn't eat one because I like my Vette just the way it is.
