It is funny as hell. However, regardless of Ellis Island or not, they would still be considered "illegal" by TODAY's standards. You couldn't just go up to Ellis Island now and do that. We did not have statutes in place as a nation back then to consider anyone legal or illegal. Ellis Island was just simply the place used to redirect traffic and control the situation. This could be done today but most likely because of $$$ they don't want to. I don't see how it's any different then crossing the border. The difference is it was organized illegal immigration and/or controlled immigration depending on your point of view.
On the otherhand, I totally agree with you that back then the objective was to come here to become citizens of the United States. And that is were the problem lies.....lack of assimilation! But it's a complete fallacy that most illegals want to turn this into "Mexico North." That's completely false. It is a very small percentage that feel this way. They simply want to have a better life because Mexico, Central America and the rest of the world, well, suck!!!!! We, the United States, not Mexicans, allow this "Mexico North" mentallity to set in.
We have lowered our standards to theirs. Like I said very clearly before, I do not support them in the slightest bit, however, I can totally see their side of the fence. Think about it, why would you learn English, if you don't have to? It goes back to what I said, "press one for English, oprima el dos para Espanol." It's human nature to find the path of least resistance. We don't enforce or impose s#it in this country. We allow them to get away with it and like human nature, they'll continue to do so......as long as we let it!
It appears clear to me that my post was not read thoroughly but merely skimmed through. As much as I hate repeating myself I guess I'll have to. I'm assuming you've never called I.C.E. and are merely voicing your opinion or belief of what you think is real life. I know several people who have called I.C.E. and collected their "ransom." Worked everytime. Maybe they can't get 'em out fast enough were you live. I.C.E. busted my friend's ex-girlfriend and her family who were here illegally from Malaysia and put the hurtin' on them real bad. Two of the three were sent home. Like I said, the choice is yours to do or do not. Don't want to call I.C.E. then call the cops and keep calling them until you are sick and tired of doing it and document it. They are illegal so they can't own the property so you know they rent.
Take their landlord to court. Call I.C.E. on him. Suit his a$s! There is a bunch of stuff you can do. My point was simply the worst thing you can do is sit around and do NOTHING!!!!! Doing NOTHING is like being one of the illegals.......a part of the PROBLEM!!!!!!!!!!! Choice is everyone's to make.
But hey, at least most, not all but MOST illegals work. Pass by your "friendly" neighborhood housing project during midday and tell me how many "residents" who are U.S. Citizens I may add, are actually working?!
So who's REALLY the burden on the taxpayer?
