That's one reason I asked about 'pay as you go'. If everything is paid up front and the job doesn't get completed you're screwed. I don't mean this as a negative comment, only that the guy could die, business could burn down or many other things could happen.
I had an engine built, actually two of them and never paid a dime up front.
