C5 Column Lock Bypass

Good morning.

Being a C2 owner for so many years I've never had the need to think about the inherent problems of other generation Vettes, specifically the C5. I am about to be joining that club with an '03 50th Anniversary Edition 6-speed Coupe.

I've heard more often than not, even from a parts guy at a local Chevy dealer, that this lock problem WILL happen eventually and a bypass should be installed PRIOR to the steering wheel locking; otherwise face the possibility of being stranded with a steering wheel that won't turn.

I ask you members who own a C5 what, if anything, did you do about this column lock situation.

Thank you. Have a great week.

Before you get stuck on the side of the road I recommend that you get a CLB installed, if the previous owner did not. The setup that the dealers (GM) use will not solve the problem.

I installed the CLB in less than 20min.

Got mine from http://www.southerncarparts.com

I put one on my coupe several weeks after buying it, 8 years ago. Never one problem, and never took the car in for the recalls. The CLB from Corvettes of Houston, along with the skip shift eliminator, should arrive today for my newly aquired Z06-Z16. Be proactive and install one.
