10 Speed Transmission

I just saw an article that said Ford and GM have collaborated on a 10 speed transmission that will be shared by the 2017 Raptor and the 2017 Camaro ZL-1. It must be a pretty tough automatic to the handle 640 hp and 640 ft/lbs of torque that the Chevy puts out. Car and Driver road tested the new ZL-1 and they were pretty impressed with the transmission. Other vehicles in both manufacturers line ups are scheduled to get this in the near future, various Corvettes I'm sure. I can't help but wonder though, if the transmission has problems is it GM's or Ford's fault?!

You do have to wonder just exactly how many gear ratios are really needed for normal street driving............ Or for ANY kind of driving, for that matter.

Yeah, it's like my 6 speed in the CTS V. I shift up to fourth gear in normal driving conditions and usually just put it in sixth. If I start out at a slow roll or even at a stop facing down hill I take off in second most of the time. Go around corners in third, with all the power and torque it's easy to drive. Glad I don't have that skip-shift though.

fuel economy is the biggest take from this. granted there is a higher weight of the transmission. there is less rpm drop between gears. so less lugging means better economy. that's my take on it.

Yeah, but that will mean more gear changing during driving which will likely mean more wear and tear on the transmission.

Lord help us if they come up with a MANUAL 10 speed. You'll recognize the owners from the bulging left leg and right arm..... :hehehe:
