C6 coupes losing their tops

2Vettes

New member
So, what's this I'm hearing about the C6 coupes with the solid tops having their roofs fly off while moving? Are the tops made differently than the C5's??

I've heard they are made the same way, but I'm not 100 % sure. Mine separated recently, but catched it before it blew. I was really concerned when I saw the gap while driving at 40 MPH.

I got this information from LeftLaneNews.com

General Motors has recalled its 2005 and 2006 Corvette models after receiving 21 complains about roof panels detaching from the car at high speed. The problem is believed to be related to the adhesive used to attach the panel.

Man, that would really suck! It would embarrass the hell out of me to be driving down the highway in my new vette and have the ROOF blow off. I could see that on a car that costs less then the headers I put on my Z, but NOT a $40K+ car......

I guess if I were riding behind someone that this happened to, I would be half expecting to see someone launched out through the top as well. Kind of like popping the lid on an ICBM silo prior to launch.... :lmao:

$50.000 plus car and speeds exceeding 150 MPH and GM decides its a good idea to use glue on the roofs.....wtf... I realize there is quite a bit of R&D and testing that goes on, but how did they miss this one? Anyway, still wouldn't stop me from eventually buying one.

Those pictures are something. I know that would really pi** me off if it were my vette. :yesnod:

Glue, huh???: :thinkin: :thinkin:

Maybe they were trying one of Ford's better ideas! :ack2:

My friend has a roof panel he found in the middle of University Blvd the other night .. haha

Cant find the owner .

Hah! The guy who lost it was probably drunk and didn't notice it taking flight. He's proabably still scratching his head over that one when he sobered up.... Probably filed a police report for a stolen roof. :lmao:

the adhesive method is really not new just looks like they had some issues...I will let you know if the roof of my new Z06 goes flying

They said it was just the coupes with painted tops, guess they were wrong :nonod:
That's exactly what I said when he called and told me. He said well obviously, GM is wrong there as also. :yesnod:

Guy i know has a new Z, roof blew off last week while doing 70 down the freeway. I couldnt believe it. Thought something like that might happen to a glass removable but not a coupe. Guess I was wrong. Glad it didnt hit the car behind him.

I think someone at GM needs to be in an unemployment line somewhere.....

when i was 18 (i'm now much older) put a new engine in my 53 chevy and my friend and I finished it up about midnight. We wanted to go out to the late bars to celebrate but would have missed closing time if we took time to bolt the hood down so we just sat it on and latched down the front latch. On the way home at about 4 AM going pretty fast my eyes blurred for a second. I then looked in the RV mirror and saw the hood land on the road behind us. Just went home and searched the junk yards the next day for a new hood. When my mother asked why my hood was a different color I told her the new engine was higher and the old hood would not fit.
