disabling/bypassing 2003 dodge stratus factory alarm

my girlfriend drives a 03 dodge stratus coupe (rt at least) not a bad chick car, and reliable for the most part. she ran into some problems with the alarm a few years ago and someone did a hack job on it, rigging it so the car ran. well she setoff the car alarm, conveniantly around the same time she misplaced her fob. i ordered a replacement fob, and trying to program it. been following the instructions, and ive tried all other methods of making it work to no avail. i know this is a stretch, but anyone know of a way to bypass the factory alarm? (or better yet can offer some insight to getting it to work again) in light of the recent burglar activity in our immediate viscinity, i realize the risk. however the auto is fully insured and it wouldnt be the worst thing in the world if it disappeared. the program instructions say to locate the obd under dash. put keys in ignition, in the off position. jump ports 1 & 4 with a jumper wire. within 10 seconds of connnecting jumper wire, press the emergency flasher botton on the car 6 times. when she does this the dinging noise ceases. the locks are supposed to cycle, and then your supposed to press the lock or unlock button on the new fob 3 times, the door locks will cycle again and the process complete. ive had no such luck. any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks
