I find it ironic that we all want to improve our cars but don’t realize the potential of improving our driving. It is so economical and rewarding to improve performance by improving our driving skills.

Improving Driving Skills - Long

I want to relate a story that made me appreciate the value of improving driving technique.

I was heavily involved in SCCA autocross and was just starting into National competition. I had run several National events and did well but was never in competition for first place, I was always 3rd or 4th.

I travelled a good distance to attend a year end National event where the current National Champion and the runner up were nearly tied for year end points. The winner of this event would finish first in points. I had run against both of these competitors several times that year and had never beaten either one of them. I was looking forward to competing against both of them at the same event.

I was planning to talk to each of them to ask their opinion of some changes I had in mind for upgrading the performance of my Corvette so that I could be more competitive the next season. On the first run the current champion broke something on his car and could not get it fixed in time for another run. He approached me and asked if he could finish the event in my car since he really wanted the year end points championship.

Here’s the rub. The National Champ was competing in a big block Corvette with a 4 speed transmission. My car was a small block with an automatic. He had never driven my car. I thought about it and decided I could learn a lot about the changes I’d need to make on my car if I let him compete in it.

We were about to start the second runs and I asked the champ for advice on what tire pressure I should be running. His answer surprised me. He said that I had the experience with my car and to just set it up the way I would if he weren’t there. So, I did.

We both ran my car in the second round. His time was 2 full seconds better than mine. This was on a <60 sec. autocross course where wins were usually determined by tenths or even hundredths of a second. I don’t remember if he pulled out the points championship or not. What I do remember is two things.

1.) After the event the runner up competitor got in my face and warned me to never let that guy drive my car again.

2.) It didn’t take me long to figure out that I didn’t need to spend a big bunch of money to improve my car. I just needed to learn how to drive.

Nice Lloyd what have you been up to haven't heard from you in a while.

I've been busy with the art league, I'll be doing the Suncoast Art Fair Jan. 22 & 23 at Wiregrass Mall. Stop by and say Hi if you get a chance. See DecoDesigns.biz for my work.

I haven't done much with the Corvettes lately except drive them. I keep thinking I'll get to Cars & Coffee or the DQ show but can't get motivated to brave the cold weather.

Hope you had a good Holiday !

Lloyd

I some how completely missed this thread. That's a nice set of books. I'll have to get back to you after the weekend after I tally up the maintenance bill on the vette (looks to need rear hubs and u-joints).
