Fire ants

Daffy

Junkyard dog
It seems that I have about a million of these things in my backyard....What's the best stuff to take em out with???? I don't dare walk out there...:ack2:

I have used Ortho Fire Ant Killer when I find a mound.
I also use a Scott's Weed/Feed/Fire Ant spread at least once a year.
Since using that I rarely find a mound.

I used to be a Lawn Tech.

Short version...
The trick is to treat the ENTIRE yard with a good product, both of what stevek mentioned are good. But first, use a fire ant bait that's specifically meant for ants and not mixed with weed killer or fertilizer. Also, don't disturb the mound, because they'll send out their soldiers and the queen will go into hiding. After treating the yard (or areas you want) let them go on with their daily routine and before ya know it...they're gone.
Then if ya want to use other products that are mixed, go ahead..the bulk of the ants should be gone and the mixed product will be more of a maintenance
against fire ants.

I've used Amdro for quite a while now. But man, with the amount of property we have, it would cost a mint to treat every mound. When we first moved down here that agricultural department used to sell Amdro in bulk at a substantial discount from what you would pay for it at Lowe's or Home Depot. But they apparently discontinued that project. Maybe they feel that the ants have won the war.

Probably my most favorite fire ant mound treatment was putting a piece of pure sodium into the top of the mound and then squirting it with a hose from a distance. I think that REALLY pissed them off........... :lmao: Looked like a miniature volcano.

I only have about 1000 squqre feet of back yard but it was infested with them... I used 15000 square feet worth of spectricide...it's pretty quiet back there now....Great to see those little mothers die:dancer01:
