Help with C-5 fuel filler door

Guys, the fuel filler door on my C-5 will not open anymore with the button inside the center console. I have to pop the hatch and go for the cable release to get it open. While this isn't a really big deal, I would like to fix it! Any suggestions? Is there a common part that seems to fail more frequently than the others in this area? Anyone else had this problem? What did it take to fix it? The next time i'm in Florida will be for 10 days, and I want to get it fixed while I'm there. Junkie, RevExtreme, C5rick......????? Thanks for any help provided :yesnod:!

While you are in FL take it to John at Auto XTC in Pinellas Park. John is very knowledgable, careful with the Vettes, and will have your problem fixed fast. I have had John do several mods to my car in the past few years.

Check the fuses and check the switch!!
If you don't find the problem there you'll probly need 1 of these!!

GM Part # 10275633
Happens so often,I keep 1 in Stock!!

Junk, I've got the GM Service Manuals for the car, and it looks to me like the fuse for the filler door circuit also supplies power to the traction control circuit. Am I right about that? The traction control circuit operates correctly, (I can turn it off and on and get the correct messages on the instrument panel) so I'm guessing that the fuse is good, and that there should be power at least to the switch for the filler door. I'm suspecting that the door actuator is the baddie, cause that's the most difficult part to replace, and that would run true to my luck :banghead:. I was just curious if there was a known bad (or weak) part in that circuit that I could concentrate my efforts on. Sounds to me like the actuator might fit that bill since you keep them on hand. Thanks for the reply!
Another Anderson (but this one's from further North) :D:D
Daughter lives in Asheville though !!!!

Andy,go here in your program!! This help you narrow it down!!

Type in "Fuel Door" in search box, after you go to your car!!
PS I have had to replace the switch, but replace the actuator more often!

Junk, the book tells me that I have to pull the inner left fenderwell as well as a bunch of carpeting in the cargo area. How hard is this to do, and what would you guesstimate total time to be if I have to replace the actuator? Might have to get someone there to keep me company while I cuss up a blue streak :lmao: I also have the GM program on the PC and printed out everything that I thought I would need when I get to Florida.

I suppose about 1.5 hrs if you get right with it!!:thumbsup:Take the wheel off and there is really nothing hard about it!!

You might try pulling the center console (it's not hard) and checking the switch. Maybe something under there that can be fixed easily.

Yeah Mark, I printed off the directions on removing the console to get at the switch as well. That will be the first thing to get checked, but like I said to Junkie, "That ain't the way my luck runs". The actuator is more expensive and harder to get at, so my luck says that it'll be the bad part!

Nope! No clicks, bangs, thumps......... nothing.

Andy, pull the carpet back over the left rear wheel well behind the speaker and you should be able the unplug the solenoid and stick a test light on the wire.Press the button if the light comes on the switch is good and you won't have to remove the console!!:thumbsup:

Thanks Junk! I give it a try when I get there. Heading down there this Friday, and have set aside next Tuesday to work on it. Gotta cruise on the weekend dontcha know!

OK, here's what happened! On Saturday, my wife wanted to go into one of the stores around here, and I decided to stay in the car because the big toe on my left foot was bothering me, and I could hardly walk. While she's in the store I decided to look inside the center console to get a better idea of what I'm gonna hafta do on Tuesday to work on it. While the console door was open, I pushed the fuel door release switch, and didn't hear a $#&%& thing. I said to myself "why isn't this thing working"?, and then started pushing on the switch repeatedly. After about 7 or 8 pushes I started hearing "clicks" from the filler door area. I looked in the rearview mirror, and saw the filler door was now open! :shrug01: I closed the door, and hit the button again. The door opened! Tried it 10 more times and every time I hit the button the door opened. I've been testing it 4 or 5 times a day, and it's been opening every time I hit the switch. I'm really glad the problem is gone, but I had already borrowed Tom Adams' jack and jack stands, and now I'm gonna hafta return them without ever getting the chance to use them :lmao:. Junk, whadda ya think? Is this coming back to bite me in the a$$ again?

Sounds to me that pulling out that switch and squirting the contacts with contact cleaner may be a good thing to do.........

:iagree::iagree:
But be careful with what contact cleaner you use!!:thumbsup:Some stuff on the market does more harm than good!!:NoNo:

I like this, but it will swell the rubber seals in wiring plugs if you really soak them, just slip the seals off and slide them back on when your done!!Doesn't leave a residue,or the affect plastic!!

PS.I wouldn't just let it set on a delicate finish though!!I've never had it do anything to one,But I have a idea that it would screw up the soft finish on a C4 console!! a:shrug01::shrug01:
