My Battery story

Been around for awhile
Well i had purchased a red top optmia battery for the vette around 3 years ago .Well for awhile now i have been having problems:banghead:,my car sits sometimes for months:shrug01:, and my red top would take a crap:ack2:.So i would charge her up and take her for a ride then she would sit for again .Long story short i was thinkin the warrantty was out for replacement. Come to find out i had 3 days left:dancer01::thumbsup:.So I drove up the Sarasota to the Interstate battery shop and the guy hands me a brand new redtop and says i have 3 years full replacement on this one:thumbsup::dancer01:Also gave me good info on how to keep her charged.Purdy simple disconnect or 2 amp charge:thumbsup:
 
How do you let it sit for months? I go nuts letting it sit for more then 2 days lol. They make quick connect for battery terminals so you dont have to wrench it off an on. Think theyre like 6 bucks a pop at basic auto store.
 
I live in Massachusetts, and my Navy Blue "snowbird" lives in Florida.
When I leave Florida to head north for a couple of months, I always
disconnect the battery. I use a wrench, but have been thinking about
one of those quick disconnect units. Anyway, EVERY time I've connected
it back up, it starts just fine. Takes about 10 miles of driving for the
computers to "re-learn", but since I don't drive it hard, I don't notice
any lack of power or anything. The only down side that I've found is that
EVERYTHING needs to be reset. The door clickers, the memory seats,
the radio presets........anything that you have set specifically for you
will be gone. Junk can probably add some more to the down side list,
but my battery stays charged. Last year it sat from the beginning of
June till the last of September with no problems. Good luck.

When I lived in Maryland I had to put the Corvettes away for winter. I disconnected the '01 NBM vert the first year and just did not like the resetting issue as you mentioned. So, I bought the Battery Tender Junior. These things are great and very compact. I would just slap one on and come spring time it was ready to go. They typically run about $40 but if you go on line and do a search I have found them in the past for under $30. I now have two and keep them around in case I don't start one of the Vettes up for a while. Never a battery issue and I think it actually extends the life of the battery.

I seem to recall hearing that everytime a battery is allowed to go dead you lose more then 10% of the battery's life. Would have to shorten the life I'm sure.:thumbsdown:

Yeah, I've heard that too. Something about lead sulfate crystals forming that short out the plates. I actually bought a device that is supposed to re-dissolve those crystals, but haven't had an opportunity to try it out.

Letting a battery go dead is supposed to be one of the quickest ways to kill a battery.
 
I never had a single issue with my red top.

Mine lasted 3 1/2 years, and this is when it started to sound weak when I started the Vette. I decided it was time for a new one. I know it had more life in it, but I am not sure how much and was not will to take the chance.

Same here. I leave the Vette in Florida when we go North for the holidays and leave it hooked up to the Battery Tender. Never had a problem.
When I take the Vette North in April and we come down in July for a little HOT sun, the Battery Tender goes on again and the battery always stays fully charged.

Whenever I have to leave mine for more than a few days I plug in my battery tender through the cigarette lighter. Quick, easy and effective.

I think I am being a little dense here but this does not make sense to me.
Taking the juice from the battery to charge the battery? :shrug01:

No, you plug the charger into the wall outlet but rather than connecting directly to the battery, I plug it into the cigarette lighter. You put the juice into the cigarette lighter. It works great.

Oh, now I got it. I told you I was being dense.
That is pretty neat. No need to hook up to the battery.
