Oil Change?

I just changed the oil in my 08 for the second time. I have 9k miles on it. I noticed small particles of what looked like aluminum in the drain oil. Is some of this normal or do I have a problem? It runs fine and I have about 40lbs of oil pressure hot at driving speed. Problems?

I think you have a problem but we need one of our experts to post. I would not like seeing that if it were my car. 40# would be low for my C5.

I talked to a friend who has one like mine and he said he found some fine shaving's on the end of the drain plug the first 2 changes and has found no more since. He has about 20k on his! Should I take it to the dealer? I try to stay away from there as much as possible?

You need one of our experts like RevXtreme to reply. I have never seen particles in my oil and my C5 runs about 48# oil pressure.

40#'s at cruise is acceptable, but on the low side of it.

Not uncommon the first change to have a small amount, but you really need your oil filter cut open & examined. That will tell the whole story of what is going on in the motor.

AL comes from either left over particles from the machining (should not ever be any if properly cleaned before assy). Iron fillings (the fine dark grey "mud" looking stuff on the magnetic oil plug is normal. especially while rings are seating. Any magnetic paticles or pieces that are shiney are a concern....they are coming from a part failing like a rocker or lifter or timing set. Brass or "gold" colored shiney particles are bearings. NOT good.

Bring in your old filter & we have a cutter & do it free if in doubt.

Thanks Tracy for the info. I hope he replies. Second oil change and still has particles plus low pressure did not sound good to me but I'm not an engine builder. Great idea to cut the filter.

Thanks for the info. I took the old oil and oil filter to the parts house where I buy my Mobil 1. They chrush the filters and send the oil off to be recycled. I geuss I will wait and see what happens. I have plenty of warranty left.

Just don't make any long trips.

I had metal shavings in my oil on my 2002 p/u. At 16k I got a new engine do to pistol slap(thats what some were calling it).i would get a noisey tapping sound for the first 15-20 sec at start up and a low noise tapping when hot at ideal. That was on a 4.8 v8 many had this problem early in 2000.I hope your is ok.
I had to go thru the BBB to get a noew engine because the dealer said all that was normal at first

This is a 08 LS3 motor. I changed oil the first time at 3k and now the second time at 9k. The oil life monitor was like 75% the first change and 68% this time. The oil was black black when I changed both times. It looked like it had 100k on it.

That would make me real nervous right there. I like to see the oil looking pretty much like it did when I put it in there when I take it out. When I bought my C5Z it took a lot of oil changes before the oil started looking that way.

Do you have a magnetic oil drain plug?

You didn't post that before. I say you have a definite problem for sure. It should look as clean as it did when you put it in. Get it to a dealer.

I went to the auto parts store where I had dropped of my oil and filter for recycle. They still had my filter un-crushed. I brought it home cut it apart and found 4 small pieces of metal. Tiny like shavings. What I am going to do is run it about a 1000 miles and change the filter and top off the oil. I will cut the filter apart again and see what I have. By the way I have been using Mobil- 1 FILTERS As well as oil.

I would take it to Tracy at RevXtreme. Let him cut it and have a look. If you're like me, we wouldn't know what we're looking at. I checked my oil pressure for you yesterday. Speed = 60 MPH, Oil Temp = 210 deg and oil pressure was 49.
