Snake ID Requested

Found this fellow hanging around the backyard a couple of weeks ago. Didn't recognize it and I knew if the wife encountered it in the yard she'd probably hurt herself trying to get back in the house, so it met its end. It was probably 18-24" long. Sorry for the large photos....Can anyone identify it?

Yeah, it's a corn snake (or Red Oak Snake as some people call them around here).

Completely harmless and darn good at catching rodents. That was the critter I bred for my SerpenCo business for many years, producing many new color and pattern variations.

I do wish you guys wouldn't just kill these guys without knowing what it is you are killing. It really isn't all that hard to become knowledgeable about the native Florida wildlife. Yeah, I know, "the only good snake is a dead snake".....

If wishes were horeses, we'd all take a ride.:D

Florida Wildlife:
Bobcat, Bear, Deer, Gator, Snake...
Key West, South Beach, Panama City (Spring Break, Daytona...Did I miss anything?

I'll try to keep a serpent guide nearby. Next time I run into one of these critters, I'll just say hold up snake. Gotta look yo' ass up before I kill ya:rofl1:

...now your catchin' on:lmao::lmao:

So were you born a redneck, or did you take college level classes? :lmao:

Born rat heya boy!

You didn't have to kill him. Unless they rattle or hiss with a big white cotton mouth just leave em alone.

Lets not forget the QUIET and colorful little Coral;)
But other than that, I'm pretty much with you.

I used to kill all of them regardless.
Sort of the "let God sort 'em out" mentality.

Then I started paying attention.

Most of them now, I just capture and remove, so as not to alarm the family, and to keep the little grandaughter from getting bit if she scares it, or as in the case of my little buddy that used to hang around in my sago palm next to the front door, I just say :wavey: and leave 'em alone:thumbsup:

Palm is gone now and so is my sneaky snake:(
Kinda miss the little feller pokin' it's head out sayin' hi when I came in at night:yesnod:

Now I just make smart assed comments to rattle serpent boys chain:lmao::lmao::rofl1::rofl1:

Oh, and it was all OJT. No college required:D

Thanks for the ID, Rich.

If it had not been in the back yard where we let the dogs out I would have just let him go his own way. But I had seen one of the dogs sniffing around in the yard earlier in the day and happened upon him in about that same spot. My one dog will go ape **** when he sees a snake (or any sign of a snake like a shed skin), so I try to keep having to deal with a riled up dog down to a minimum.

Also whether or not an animal is 'harmless' or not has nothing to do with whether or not they are a nuisance. My experience has been that very rarely do you see such a critter only once.

Well the thing to remember is that if a snake is hanging around, then there is quite likely a ready food source for it to keep it interested in being there. Since many snakes are rodent eaters, this really should be kept in mind, as rodents will do FAR more damage to your property than a snake will. Heck, when I had rats and mice chewing up the wiring on my vehicles, I was praying that more gray rat snakes would move into the area to take care of them.

Yeah, I left a big white oak snake under the carport at my parents' old house just for that reason. The only thing we've had that the snake would be after would be the toads that sit outside the windows at night and catch the bugs trying to come toward the light. I haven't even seen a field mouse since moving in out here last year. We do have gophers, but they've stayed away from the yard since the dogs have been here...for the most part.
