Tesla Motors 100% Electric 0-60 in 4 seconds car!

It's about $100,000. 135mpg equivalent. It runs on 6,831 lithium ion batteries. I sure hope it's not those Sony laptop batteries! About a 250 mile range and it generally takes 3.5 hours to charge.

There is no clutch and it has a two speed transmission.

Lotus is actually assembling the car. I read in a Wired magazine article that Tesla Motors had actually hired away so many employees from Lotus that they drafted an agreement that they wouldn't take any more workers!

They've sold out the first 100 and are taking orders for the next 100. I understand they are also working on a lower priced sedan now.

lotus huh. they borrowed so much design from the elise that i'd say its not worth 100000 even at 132 mpg. You could drive alot of miles in an elise before youre paying that much. Besides, that car cannot sound very good. :ack2:

Cool idea though. wish it looked more unique though. Perhaps a hybrid sportscar...

It doesn't look too bad but I thought the same thing about it being a Elise copy.

Looks cool ,but I don't see myself spending that much on it. Just can't wrap my hands around electric cars yet.

My friends and I have been having some extensive debate on this. The operating range is going to be significantly less than claimed when the car is driven as intended, in "spirited driving". The stated ranges are for EPA test conditions, which as we all know don't reflect actual real-life driving behavior. Lithium Ion (or Polymer "LiPo") batteries are prone to failure. When they fail, they fail combustively/explosively. These are the same type batteries used by Dell and Apple, that have attracted so much attention lately for exactly this kind of problem. But with nearly 7K of these suckers per car, the probability of failure is going to be much greater for a Tesla than for a Dell laptop or MacBook Pro. Even if they don't fail destructively, they are still going to fail at a rate that will necessitate constant replacement. It's just too many of the same could-never-be-100%-reliable part. In addition, Lithium batteries have limited charge/discharge life cycles. They "fatigue". Tesla says the car will go 100K miles before having to have the battery pack replaced, but that's at the stated maximum-range/charge rating. Assuming the car gets a more realistic range of about 50% of the stated range, you're going to be shelling out a significant chunk of change for a new battery pack at closer to 50K miles.

The car only makes about 180Ft-Lbs of torque. Admittedly, that's at 0 RPM. But electric motors make the most torque when stalled, the torque drops off linearly as RPM increases. It's the wrong kind of "curve" for the kind of acceleration we Corvette acceleration-junkies crave. The car is quick to 60, but more by virtue of it's light weight and tall gearing (no shift) than anything else. I haven't seen a posted 1/4 mile, but I bet it's pretty feeble.

Nice idea, but this is more marketing hype than they'd like to you realize. Certainly a damn site better than any other electric out there on the market now, but not the real high-performance vehicle they'd have you believe.

Are you a "Player" or a "Poser"? I'd argue Tesla is more of a "Poser".

Great post Rocket. I'm personally waiting to see the guy whose car runs on water. Have you seen it? I'm pretty sure I still have the video. He lives right here in Clearwater.

BTW, I love the new look animated sig.

Thanks. Yeah, I've seen the runs-on-water thing. It's easy to do if you live in a universe where matter and energy aren't conserved. Unfortunately, we all live in a universe where that law is fundamental and immutable.

Glad you like the Sig. I just threw it in there, I had it lying around (I use it on the "Homage to my Z06" page you get if you click the Sig). The other forum restricted Sigs, and animation is one of the things they proscribed.
