C5 Which cold air induction?????????????

Which cold air induction (that's of a reasonable price) do you guys recommend?

My desire at the moment is to gain a modest increase in power and milage at a reasonable cost.

Besides changing the air filter in the factory box is a PITA.

Heck, I can't remember what I had on my C5Z before I went with the STS turbos, but I do remember it was one rather LARGE exposed filter instead of some of those divided dual jobs you see advertized. I read somewhere that the ones that have a filter branching to each side from a fork can introduce turbulence in the air stream. But honestly, some folks say turbulence is bad, and others will say it is good... :shrug01:

What ever you look at, try to determine how resistant it is to ingesting water if you hit a surprise soaker while on the road and hit a puddle deeper than you realize. Hydrolocking the engine is no joke.

Thinking back, I think the "Honker" was one that got the highest marks from what I can remember...

I had a K&N system on mine, right price was the main driving force on that choice. I did further reading and if as was purchasing now, Halltech would probably be it.
Rob always liked the stock set up with just a K&N filter.
Was you at Joes the day he and Rob intalled my K&N?

Yes I was

Thanks guys, I'm going to continue to look, learn and research. It's not so much that I've been (too) bitten by the bug but the other day I changed the stock air filter to a K&N. The K&N had a small air sealing gasket that had to be installed in the factory air box before actually sliding in the filter tray and filter.

I'm still not real sure it's completely sealed 'cause you cant see anything but the top portion of the filter and housing. That doesn't please me so it seems the (kinda) logical approach is to replace the whole dang thing with an air intake that will provide either breathing and no doubt a better seal.

I do like Cyclone because it looks like it'll keep water out. The Halltech is a good unit also as is the K&N. Just gotta learn a bit more before I leap.

Hey Ken,

When I bought my Z06 from the original owner he had installed an SLP Blackwing CAI. He gave me the stock system in a box. I can't tell you much about the Blackwing since I have never driven the Z without it, but it sure is impressive with it.

But, I will tell you that most CAI systems that are installed without a tune can give the 'puter a lean condition and kick a code and Check Engine light under certain situations. I have never had a problem driving normally on the street, even with an occassional throttle stomp. I have also run my Z06 at some HPDEs at Pocono, Summit Point, and Road Atlanta without an issue. But it seems that every time I autocross the car, which is only once or twice a year, I will pull a lean condition code in the DIC and get the dreaded Check Engine light. Not a big deal to clear the code, but I really think that with the CAI, the hard acceleration and quick lift required at autocrosses puts more air into the system than the stock program likes. I am sure some of the guys on this board that are much smarter than I about tunes and CAIs, can give you more information.

BTW, your Z was made for a little off street racing! Good luck with your search.

Rich

Thanks Rich.

I really don't want to modify anything that will cause codes to be displayed or cause the necessity of a tune up. I'm rather happy with the little 405 HP that my Z produces. If I can find a CAI system that you guys recommend than I will research it further.

I did notice that none of the mfg/dist. even mention that their system might require tune up changes or codes to be thrown.

Tracy if you're following this thread I'd like to hear from you as to what you think will work best for me too.:shrug01::shrug01:
